Millie is a rescue from a PA puppy mill. She was born with a severely deformed right front leg and a bowed left front leg. She is our first rescue in honor of Suri (see her story below). Everyone she meets is greated with her endless tail wags, kiss's and a smile. She is ready to go to a home of her own. Visit her at http://www.delawarepuppyrescue.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=2261108

Our girl Suri will continue to touch many, ,

Always Smiling!

2/1/10 Update: We want to thank all of the Suri supporters for your notes and donations. Our days are still very, very difficult without her. The world really has lost a very special girl. There wasn't a person who couldn't help but smile when approached by her and it hurts to know the joy she would have brought to so many more who needed to see her strength above limitations that has been taken away.
The Kennett Township Police, Chief McCarthy, will be filing charges against the owner of the dogs responsibile for this attack. To our amazement they are still running loose. Though what is considered a "dangerous dog" situation may not be a top priority to pursue we are confident that Chief McCarthy will bring us justice for Suri. We know it will never make things better for us but we will make sure that no others will be victims of these irresponsible dog owners.
Suri Smiles fund has reached $2000.00 and will continue to receive donations through DPR adoptions and generous supporters who learn of her story. These funds will be used for other special need's dogs that will be rescued in Suri's honor. She would have expected as much from us.
We will continue to update Suri's page as we progress with the pending charges and the justice we pursue for her.

1/19/10 Update: It is with broken hearts that we let you know that Suri was killed today. She was in her own front yard with her mom Midge when a neighbor's dog ran into the yard, grabbed her and dragged her back to his own yard where there were two other dogs who attacked her. Suri's mom could not get to her in time and when she picked her up in her arms Suri had only a few breaths left in her and than passed on. We are beyond devastated about this loss. It was so needless.
Suri was an example to everyone of the possibility of redemption – of the power of a joyful and courageous spirit over a broken body. While she was only with us for a short time she will never be forgotten.
DPR and Suri's mom have created a foundation in Suri's honor. The funds donated and raised for this foundation will go towards special needs dogs like Suri. We are angry that this dog owner stole away the smiles and happiness that Suri would have given so many but we are so grateful that she was part of our lives. Her light will continue to shine.

11/1 Update: Our girl Suri is doing wonderfully, walking upright on her back legs and bringing joy to everyone that meets her. Suri's mom Midge takes her everywhere and is able to share the joy of Suri with all that meet her. Suri will be trained to be a therapy dog as she gets older. We know she will bring joy to so many as she has been doing since the day we were lucky enough to rescue her.
10/1 Update: Our girl Suri, doing very well, is going to need a fourth surgery to correct her left front leg. She is not using it like we had hoped but it hasn't slowed her down. She is still walking upright for the most part but will from time to time walk on three legs. We are going to give her a break for awhile before proceeding with the next surgery. Unfortunately it will be one that is needed as walking on just her hind legs is not good for her back. We will keep you posted but don't worry - she is still a very, very happy girl!
8/12 Update: Suri had her 3rd surgery on August 7th and is recovering nicely. Her doctor says he is caustiously optomistic that the surgery will be the last major one she needs. Our poor girl is in a body cast so that no damage can be done to the detailed work performed on her leg and to ensure the pins do not shift. She will go back for bandage re-wraps, x-rays and hopefully pin removal over the next several weeks. You would think Suri would be frustrated with the limited movement, but like the trooper she is, getting around just takes longer with some special moves she's created. She still gets to where she wants to be. She has also learned how to walk on her two back paws and does it very well.
Suri's total vet care, to date, has cost over $4500.00. We thank everyone for their donations and appreciate all future donations to her care.
TO US, SHE HAS BEEN WORTH EVERY PENNY!!

7/19 Update: Well we have good news for a change. Suri's leg has repaired very nicely on it's own from the break and she is now allowed to start using it on a limited basis - AND SHE IS! Granted it doesn't look very graceful but after 2.5 very long months we are at the point we had hoped for the first of her two legs. Suri is scheduled for one more x-ray 7/31 and we than expect to schedule surgery #2 for her other leg. We hope to get some video of Suri that we can post in the next week for everyone to enjoy.
6/19 Update: Suri's latest x-rays showed that part of her leg that had surgery is broken where one of the pins had been implanted. Because she is now getting the proper nutrition and supplements her doctor has hope that it will heal quickly and completely. So for now we are in a holding pattern. Her next x-ray will be scheduled in late June, early July. The good news is that Suri is still full of life and spunk. Her foster mom continues to struggle to keep her still but takes her everywhere she goes so that her life is full and well socialized.
6/12 Update: We have not yet been able to schedule Suri's second surgery at this time. Unfortunately, due to poor nurtrition throughout her life her bones are extremely brittle and did not bond like her vet had hoped. She is scheduled for another x-ray on June 16th where we will make some decisions as to our next step. We have not been able to begin physical therapy for fear of her damaging the work that has been done. We're hitting a few bumps in the road but still have high hopes that we will get her to the point of having a normal life.
5/17 Update:
Suri is holding strong like we knew she would. Still unable to use her leg and actually started experiencing some pain due to a shift in one of the pins. Her doctor examined her and was able to manipulate the pin back in place and she is feeling much better. Her foster mom is working very hard at keeping her still until the pins can be removed on Friday.
5/9 Update: Suri had her surgery on her right front leg and is now back home recovering. She is not yet able to use the leg. There are several pins placed in it where the breaks were made in order for it to be extended like a normal leg. She will return in two weeks back to the vet for x-rays to see her progress. She is not allowed to do much of anything right now to protect the leg. Not an easy job for her foster mom! She is being carried pampose style which she seems to be enjoying.
Suri is our latest puppy mill rescue - a four month old 5 lb. Coton de Tulear/Shih Tzu mix. She was diagnosed with congenital elbow luxation, with lateral displacement of the proximal ulna. Basically, what that means is that her front legs are restricted in movement which does not allow her to stand up all the way. Her back legs seem to be quite normal and this allows her to get around very well. She "hops" like a rabbit and doesn't seem to notice that she is any different than her foster brothers. To add to Suri's problems she was hospitilized last week. She was treated at Limestone Vet Hospital and has since recovered wonderfully. Dr. Art Jankowski of Delaware Speciality Center of Delaware on Newport Pike will be performing the first of two surgery's on Suri Friday, May 8th on one of her two front legs. If the surgery is successful we will than schedule the second surgery for her second leg. Medical costs including her parvo treatment and both surgeries will be in the range of $5000.00. We don't typically go out this far on a limb for one puppy. We know $5000.00 could go to so many others but we committed to her and we will see her through. If you met her you would know why instantly. She is full of spunk and life. She will take on any challenge. Even with little use of her front legs she has even mastered stairs.
